Kink On Tap 21: Welcome to the Privacy Wars

Why would James Chartrand, a prolific male copyright blogger, refuse to use the telephone and admit to wearing woman’s underwear? Because he’s actually a she who couldn’t get established being female, so she created a differently-gendered pseudonym. But in some places, like Facebook, the value of pseudonymity isn’t well recognized or respected, and if that trend continues we fear that privacy could become yet another privilege for the wealthy. Welcome to the Privacy Wars.
This week, Emma and I invited friends of the show Viviane and Nikolas to join us for an extremely important conversation with world-reknowned digital identity expert, Kaliya Hamlin. We are absolutely honored that Kaliya took the trouble to teach us about her work saving the world with user-centric identity, and what that means.
This is a show whose wiki show notes page is stuffed to the brim with important and educational articles. We strongly encourage you to surf on over to the additional links and external references section of our show note page for Kink On Tap 21 to get the full list. However, for those of you with lazy fingers (you know who you are ;) here’s a shorter list:
- TheSocialWeb.tv: From SXWS: Can’t I Just Be Me? – In this video, Kaliya discusses why and how she intentionally manages multiple identities online.
- The Creepy Data | Identity Woman – Kaliya discusses how some companies capture an individual’s data.
- Online Reputation Management for Sex Bloggers – maymay’s take on why and how to be out online—safely, of course.
- On Facebook, Only the Rich Have Privacy – A research study shows that when default settings don’t respect privacy, only the wealthy (whether in terms of money or education) are actually afforded the privilege.
It’s also worth pointing out that if you’re in the San Francisco area and want to learn more about this enormous and complex topic in a face-to-face way, you should check out a new monthly workshop series being hosted at the Center for Sex and Culture called Deviants Online. The next Deviants Online workshop in January will be co-hosted jointly by Sarah Dopp, the inspirational founder of Genderfork.com, along with your’s truly, maymay.
