We already knew that Rhode Island takes a very oppositional stance on (sex) "education," but now we see why this is dangerous. As reported by Karen Ziner, Governor "Carcieri said he vetoed [a bill that would have added 'gender identity and gender-related expression' to Rhode Island's Hate Crimes Monitoring Act] because he found the terms gender identity or expression 'confusing.'" Although Carcieri may be confused, the State House and Senate aren't, having passed the bill by majority vote.

Reportedly, "[GLBT] organizations and their supporters criticized Governor Carcieri," (hell yeah, we did) and today they called on the General Assembly to override the veto. The bill would merely record statistics about hate crimes against GLBT people. Carcieri seems uninterested in educating himself or the general public about that situation. No surprise there.
